Background color tranparency

Hello.

I'm configuring the apearence of my forum and I have a question for anyone who can help me. I have a backgroud picture and I would like it to be visible but I'm trying to mantain a background color so the leters are visible too.

If i use an alpha filter apllied to the background (td.background{filter:Alpha(Opacity=80);) I'll get the all forum whith an opacity of 80%...
If i use an alpha filter apllied to the background color (td.background-color{filter:Alpha(Opacity=80);) nothing happens...

After reading a topic here I tryed also the use of two colors one to be transparent and the other to be the original background color (the one I wanted to set semi-transparent). I've tried to use this code:

.bodyline{
background-color: #555555;
color: transparent;
opacity: 50%;
border: 1px #4596e1 solid;
}

... but, again, no changes were made :(

How can I solve this issue? (I only want to get the background color with opacity)

Cheers!

I'm a beginer in CCS and I may not have explained myself in the best way so here are the links to my forum and it's CCS page... all I want is to set the gray background (#555555) to be 80% transparent (not the entire page/forum)...

opacity is a css3 attribute and only modern browsers like Firefox and Opera support it. IE has a tough enough time with CSS1 much less anything more advanced. You are using a lot of IE only code which I would never use so can't help you beyond that.

Thanks for answering ;)

I've just recently started to learn CCS with the construction of this forum... I took a look on this CCS codepage to learn the structure and tried to lookup information on websites/forums like this one.

This codepage was the one avaliable originally in my forum... I only made a few changes like adding background pictures and changing colors :)

If I implemented an CCS3 code in my forum would the IE users be able to access my forum with no restrictions? (I have many forum users that browse the web trough IE)...

If so how can I change the code related to "bodyline" from CCS1 to CCS3 in order to make the background-color look transparent? do I have to change all the page's code? Is it needed to achieve this gold?

Thanks again!

Cheers

PS: Currently I'm using this CCS Code. In the .bodyline there's an Alpha Filter which makes all the page semi-transparent... still I haven't yet been able to aplly the transparency exclusivelly to the background color (dark gray, #555555).

First, it's CSS, Cascading Style Sheets, not CCS.
Second, CSS only styles a web page and does not restrict access to anything.
Third, 'filters' are not standard code so I have no use for them but I will look into this as time permits. Using CSS3 attributes will not affect bad browsers like IE.

Hi drhowarddrfine.

First of all thanks for helping :D
Sorry for my poor english, when I said "with no restrictions" I meant to ask if IE users would be able to view the page normally or if they wouldn't see correctlly the parts programmed in CSS3 code (already answered ;) ).

I've disabled the alpha filter on my CCS code because the forum was incredibly slow due to it's use :(

I'll try to find information on the web on CSS to learn a bit how it works ;)

Thanks again for all the help you're giving me!
Cheers.
