Sound and W3C

Ben
How do I add sound so that it plays automatically when the page is
loaded? My search turned up some references to <bgsound>, but it was
described as a Microsoft-designed tag. I prefer to stick to
non-properietary standards.

Also, is there a sound format that most browsers can play natively,
without a plug-in? The sound is 5-seconds, voice-only.

Eugh. Nasty. Horrible. My speakers are my own, don't touch them without
explicit permission! (This is not an uncommonly held view).

That said, the standard way to include media is with the <objectelement.

Agreed. If a website makes noise, I leave. It's a little rule I have.
Goes double for sound/video ads. If you want readers, do not put this
crap on your site.

I wonder how many people actually browse with their sound turned on?

These days, many of our users spend time connected-in to
videoconferences, using personal videoconferencing stations based on
their peecee[1]. You can imagine how pleased they are if they do a
bit of web browsing on the side, and it comes blaring out into their
videoconference.

I do - otherwise I don't hear the music I'm playing :-)
And I hate it when some website builder thinks I want to hear their
stuff right through it, especially when there isn't a big fat red
button "stop the sound" in the center of the viewport.

It was pretty common that I was listening to music (mp3 or streaming) using
headphones at work. There was a particular website, which I was visiting
once in a while, that sometimes had a 'speaking ad'. It always scared the
hell out of me, when a person materialized directly behind me and spoke to
me, although I had not notice anyone coming into the room...

You (generally) don't.
My search turned up some references to <bgsound>,
So use <bgsound>. Not many want it, those who do want it and will also
be prevented from it by lack of support for <bgsoundare a vanishingly
small group. Think of it as a feature, not a bug.

I do, I'm listening to music through headphones about half the time.

That's one reason why in-page sounds are such a bad idea - they tend to
make a horrible mess whenever something's already playing.

Thanks for the info about <object>. It seems to require a sound file
that runs off a plugin. Is there a sound format that browsers play
natively (maybe AIFF?), and does it still work with <object>?

I've thought of a way to make the page work with the sound optional,
but since it is such a small sound-bite (5 seconds of voice), I'm
hoping to avoid plugins.

I agree, but can't you shut off the sound on your browser (-and turn it
back on again when you may want to?)

PS: I'm not asking as a point, I don't know - although I seem to remember
seeing such options somewhere.

Hmm, no cure for that, I guess. Me, I just listen to the radio, if
anything.

I'm basically agin' anything which starts <cringe>automatically</cringein
a page. It's also why I don't use Flash and won't until most of it is
truly optional. Those ?designers? which markup crap like that in their
pages are really clueless.

Not that I know of, but then again, I never investigated all the
options of the various browsers. I know Opera started talking to me
the other day when I accidentally hit a shortcut, but other than
that... they don't seem to do much with sound :-)

No such memories here ;-)

Don't!! Instead, provide a link to users, with text indicating they
should select that link if they want to hear your voice.

I find the many sounds of Micro$oft applications to be very annoying, so
I generally have my speakers turned off. I usually turn them on when I
want to listen to music, either from a CD or from the Web via
RealPlayer. I really don't want to hear your voice over a Beethoven
symphony or (horrors) "Carmina Burana".

In Opera one can do this in the quick-preferences menu - F12.
