question on vertical-align: properties

Everytime I use the vertical-align: middle; property, it seems to do
absolutely nothing. Isn't it supposed to be the equivalent of using "td
vAlign="middle"' with a table layout?

Here is an example, I'm trying to get the text line up in the vertical
middle of the logo, as opposed to the bottom of it.

Here is the direct link to the stylesheet:

Any input appreciated

Add the style to the logo image.
