Recommend a good text area formatting interface?

I'd like to integrate a text formatter for some text areas. Can someone
recommend a good place to look to find out more about open-source
options, as well as tips on coding your own? I'm interested in looking
at pre-made ones, but would actually like to hand-code one too for my
own benefit.

Look up "html textarea editor" or similar keywords. I like tinyMCE, but
it is growing into quite the monster.

Study the code for some of the existing scripts, then you may change
your mind. ;)
