Try SmartFtp or FileZilla - both free.

Used to use both SimpleFTP (probably pre v.2.0) and WS-FTP-LE, now won't
use anything but FileZilla.

What does FileZilla provide over WS-FTP that is so useful? I've used
WS-FTP95-LE since, well, 1995 I suppose, and never felt the lack of
anything. FTP is not exactly complex. But maybe there's something I've
never thought of.

The only thing that comes to mind is that WS-FTP won't delete a
directory unless it's emptied first. That can be a pain.

Me too. I've tried numerous others, including FileZilla and SmartFTP,
but I keep coming back to WS-FTP. It's straight-forward and rock solid.

Give FTP Commander a try. I am an old WS_FTP user, and nothing I
found was as good - until someone recoomended FTP Commander. http://www.internet-soft.com/download.htm

I apologize for entering this thread late and someone may have
mentioned this, but my main reason for liking WS-FTP is the batch
interface. I have batch files that, with one mouse click, extract all
the files in an application with the archieve bit on and upload them
to the proper spot on my web pages. It's a huge time saver.

Easier to manage multiple concurrent connections in separate application
windows. Better remote UNIX umask utility.

Perhaps I am seeking the wrong type of ftp client, but having failed to
quickly find a GUI ftp I liked, I just used a shell script with a Here
document to feed the command line ftp that came with a Macintosh. I've
done a couple of more specialised scripts since then, but since updating
a web site is mostly repetition, a script seemed reasonable.
I was actually a little annoyed to find the Macintosh command line ftp
didn't have the batch file option that the Windows command line ftp had,
since the Windows one obviously derived from Unix - even the options
were indicated by - rather than \.
Every now and then I think I should do a find -newer based script, but
that never reached the top of the todo list.

I've tried, under windows 2000 to write FTP batch files directly. I've
didn't get very far. Anyone done this successfully? Perhaps you could
provide a sample script that show http://www.ncftp.com/ to be unecessary
(under win 2000 and above)?

My FTP scripts, such as the one that uploads files for my blog, are in
Perl. Suggest you research the Net::FTP module at cpan.org. For
windows you can download Perl at: http://www.activestate.com/

Thanks Eric. You prompt me to try again.
Here is output for one of my sessions. It shows I can get someway into the
session. I get stuck when trying to list files in the current remote
directory. I execute the command, get some results as show, and the prompt
fails to reappear... the session seems to hang. I have also tried the ls
command. Same result.
Why does my FTP session hang when I try to do a simple list of the remote
directory?

Compatibility problem between client and server? Have you tried setting
the PASV (passive) mode toggle? On my Macintosh I can't use my command
line ftp with one of my sites unless I toggle EPSV4 so that extended
passive mode turns off and regular passive mode is on. I have no idea
why, and there is no error message. Just hangs on simple things, even
an ls sometimes.

I have this definite problem. Can't ftp anywhere without bypassing my
external routers firewall all together.

That is an excellent description of the ftp problem. Thank you very
much for that.
I didn't need PASV when I had a dial up line to an ISP, and that ISP was
hosting my web site. Unfortunately over a very short period I managed
to change from a PC to a Mac, connect via WiFi (using a Apple dial up
wireless access point router) but without FTP problems, then change ISP,
and move to a different brand broadband router, and had problems only
with one ftp server (of three), later two out of four.
I had left my router and software firewalls pretty open, but would like
to revisit the settings and tighten security somewhat more.
One place I ftp to runs on a single Sun Cobalt system, and that doesn't
seem to care whether I use PASV or EPSV. Two others needs PASV, and
probably do load balancing. With all the changes I'd been making I
never did pay enough attention to why FTP was suddenly sometimes a
problem at a site that previously wasn't a problem. Much clearer now.
Thanks again.
