Web creator recommendation needed.

I can't afford Front Page. I have had nothing but trouble with
Composer.

Any recommendations, please?

Try nvu, http://nvu.com. It is free. Note, however, that it is now
version 1.0, and has both limitations and bugs.

Nvu 1.0: http://www.nvu.com/

There are newsgroups for help, assistance, bug reports/enhancements.
Nvu
- is highly web standards compliant,
- is free,
- is open source,
- is community-driven, is user need driven
- is multi-platform (Windows, Linux, Mac),
- is available in many languages (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese,
Russian, German, etc.),
- has an User Guide in 3 languages (2 of them in the process of being
translated),
- allows support for 4 DTDs (HTML 4.01 strict, XHTML 1.0 transitional,
XHTML 1.0 strict)
- has a built-in CSS editor
- is being improved in all sorts of areas
- etc.

Nvu won't do magics, Nvu won't make you create professional web sites
(you would need web authoring knowledge, experience, reading books,
etc.), Nvu is not a web Aladdin lamp, Nvu is not perfect either but...
it certainly costs less than DreamWeaver 8 ($399.US), Nvu is already
better than a lot of HTML editors (like FrontPage 2000).

There.

Yes, crosspost. Don't multipost.

Well, that's not working so well. See
http://home-1.tiscali.nl/~knmg0017/nvu_test.htm , wich was written
with nvu 1.0, and validate the source
(http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=ht...line&verbose=1)

I set nvu to
-use strict html 4.01
-use css style instead of html attributes

Still it produces a wrong doctype declaration and wrong attributtes
that are even non-existing in html 4.01 transitional
(align="undefined"), let alone the strict dtd.

That being said, I still think it's one of the better free editors if
you insist on (pseudo-)WYSIWYG.

I think you copied the source code of an existing webpage. I can not
reproduce the page you created. align="undefined": how did you create
this? I have no idea. If you can tell me how you created such code, then
I would file a bugreport on this.

Can you post an message in the nvu mailing list for this?

I would like a visual editor at times so I tried nvu. I uninstalled it
after trying it because it trashed the page I worked on with it. Set
to strict HTML 4.01, CSS, and the option to not reformat HTML, it
reformatted the page anyway. I'm glad I had made a backup of the file
before trying it because it was a mess.

The other thing that it doesn't do that I find critical is secure file
transfer. On checking, there are no plans to include it.

I'll stick with UltraEdit on the Windows platform and Kate on Linux.

I started out with a blank page (that is from scratch).
Added a Header
Added a table
Saved to disk
FTP'd it to my webpage

If, o.t.o.h. I open an existing file with a table in it, of wich the
layout is in an external CSS, after modifying the contents of the
table it _will_ leave the markup as I originally coded it, it just
messes up the indentation etc. in the source...

B.t.w I'm usng a translated (Dutch) version of nvu (version 1.0 build
(20050620)), and this is probably not the latest one avaiable I guess.

It has more bugs though. When closing with a modified file open, if
you click "No" on the "save this file dialog", it does not close the
apllication. Just found tha out now ...
Can you post an message in the nvu mailing list for this?

It seems to me that you may not have understood my previously posted
question.

Your initial post implied that Nvu 1.0 was used to create the file
http://home-1.tiscali.nl/~knmg0017/nvu_test.htm
That is what I understood.
I then asked you how did you create align="undefined" and
valign="undefined" with Nvu. I meant specific steps, explicit steps here.
B.t.w I'm usng a translated (Dutch) version of nvu (version 1.0 build

Well, it is the latest available. If you have a doubt, then just visit
www.nvu.com to get the latest available.

Maybe this time I'll be able to give you the answer that (I think)
you're looking for ?

This is what I did to create the html-file:
- Start nvu
- nvu starts with a blank page
- menu -> table -> insert -> table
- this opens the "insert table" dialog
(just translating back the captions from Duch here)
- click on tab "precise"
- rows: 2
- cols: 2
- width: 100%
- border: 0
- click on button "advanced"
- click on tab "HTML-attributes"
- remove attribute "cell-spacing" *
- remove attribute "cell-padding" *
- remove attribute "border" *
- click OK to close "advanced dialog"
- click OK to close "insert table" dialog
- added A1, B1, A2, B2 text in the cells
- menu -> file -> save
- fill in title in "add page title" dialog
- click OK on "add page title" dialog

This then produced the file as you can see it on my site.
If you omit the steps marked with an asterix (*), it will make no
differences. Nvu insists on adding the (v)align="undefined" into the
source.
All this was done in "normal view" b.t.w.

I'll check it out !

Here seems to be the place to report bugs ...

Bart,

It will make a difference if the editor.table property values have not
been set by the software at that point.
Removing cellspacing or setting its value to 0 will change the
editor.table.align property value in the software to "undefined".

Nvu insists on adding the (v)align="undefined" into the source.
All this was done in "normal view" b.t.w.

I just sent you a short email on this issue.
I reported the bug.
A workaround is to reset both align attribute values in about:config
editor.table.default_align
editor.table.default_valign
