background image and image map

Hi,
I have a header which consists of an image with clickable areas. Now since
this header appears on all my pages it would make sense to put it as a
background-image in my CSS. However, I can't see how I can put the image
maps in the CSS.
(I guess it can't be done because backgrounds are backgrounds and should not
have active areas?)

No, CSS is for presentation, not for including common content in multiple
documents.

Assuming that the image contains text, using an image map for site
navigation is not a good idea even if you have provided alt content
(many don't). The graphic "text" doesn't adapt to the client system's
hardware and settings, making the "text" unreadable on certain systems.

Nope, the image is an image :-)

No, CSS is for presentation,

True. But external CSS is also for keeping presentation consistent over
pages.
not for including common content in multiple documents.

IMO image maps sit on the edge of content and presentation.
The problem is that my host has extremely poor support, I can't even use
SSI. I was thinking of writing my own preprocessor, but perhaps IncludeHTML
or another free preprocessor will do the job. I'll have a look at it.
