Why has Google sent me to Coventry?

Not sure if this is the best group to pose this question in, but I'll try.

My web pages have habitually had a lot of hits via Google searches, but
suddenly, around last weekend, the hits dropped to zero. I've just done
a check, and it seems that none of my pages -- even the fairly unique
ones -- now show up on Google at all!

If I search via Yahoo or something, they pop right up, but I'm somewhat
offended that Google has dumped me! I don't think I even have anything
offensive or copyrighted on the pages, so I can't imagine I've upset
them. (:-/)

Anyone have any idea what might have happened?

Sorry, lost energy on your part.

So, ask Google, for it sure as h..l has nothing to do with how to author
HTML pages for the www, as is what this NG is all about.

Hmm. Someone has an ego problem, don't they... You didn't have an
answer, but you still had to respond just to diss me.

FYI, I scanned the list of groups to find a more appropriate one *before*
I posted here, but couldn't find one (aside from comp.infosystems.www.misc
which has *nothing* but spam, so I assume no-one uses it...)
If you *do* know of a more appropriate group you could have been much more
helpful by mentioning it, instead of trying to be a pain in the ass.

He gave you the perfect answer: ask Google.

It might do... The pages may be authored very badly, but then we can't
tell as we don't know the address.

Probably a more positive answer than to just "ask Google" would be to look
at Google's webmastering information <http://www.google.com/webmasters/>.

If you're going to swear, don't insult our intelligence by thinking that
omitting some of the letters makes it any less offensive. Either write the
whole word, or write something else.

I know; but maybe the best method to use is to adopt the American TV way
full out, as in...

"What the 'beeeeeep'"

Equally as annoying...

If we're going to be a smartalec about it, I suggest using the word
"Microsoft", as in: "That's all Microsofted up!" :-p

For what it's worth, that URL is not very easy to find. When I first
saw the original query I spent several minutes searching Google site for
advice on getting pages listed, and all I came up with was the "Add URL"
form. If I had thought to search "advice to webmasters" it might have been
better, but I didn't.

IMHO, "ask Google" is like "look in the library" -- an accurate answer but
so general as to be useless. If people can't give at least some shred of a
more useful hint, they might do better to sit that particular thread out.

Not when the original question is of the form "why does google do xyz?"

Not really....

Go to <http://www.google.com/>
Try the "about Google" link.
The next page that comes up has four brief sections, one's "for site
owners", and there it is.

I dare say that posing a suitably phrased question into the search engine
would find the right results, too. Even just stupidly typing "help" into
Google, by itself, finds something useful on the first page.

But I'm sure many of us in here already knew it, and it was a better answer
than just "ask Google"...

Tim, thanks for the pointer. It probably has answered my question.
On that page it gives reasons why references might disappear (temporarily).
As there were a couple of network outages in our area recently, they
probably just coincided with google's search and caused the links to
drop.

But of course I *did* go first to Google before I posted, and looked
for a "Contacts" or something. Couldn't find one. My bad, I guess.

On the other hand, I thought that I might find some knowledgeable folks
here, but aside from you and Stan, all I got was sarcasm. Oh well,
I try not to make mistakes twice.

Cheers,
