WMV in MZ and FF on Win

I'm trying to play .wmv files under MS Windows on MZ 1.7.5 and FF 1.0.
This is the code I'm trying:

<object
id="wmvObj"
classid="CLSID:22d6f312-b0f6-11d0-94ab-0080c74c7e95"
codebase=
"http://activex.microsoft.com/activex/controls/mplayer/en/nsmp2inf.cab#Version=6,4,5,715";
width="320"
height="286"
standby="Loading media...">
<param name="FileName" value="sample.wmv">
<param name="AutoStart" value="true">
<param name="ShowControls" value="true">

<embed type="video/x-ms-wmv"
pluginspage="http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/MediaPlayer/"
src="sample.wmv"
name="wmvEmb"
id="wmvEmb"
width="320"
height="286"
AutoStart="true"
ShowControls="true"
</embed>
</object>

While it works for IE all I get on MZ and FF is a blank WMP window. If I
right-mouse click it and select 'error details' a dialog tells me that
"Windows Media Player cannot find the specified file...'.

I'm testing this off my local machine and I've put the .wmv file in the
same folder as the .html file. What can I do to get MZ to play .wmv files?

Yes I've tried it with a full URL but go the same negative result.

The saga continues. I found some code on the MSDN site:
<url:http://msdn.microsoft.com/archive/default.asp?url=/archive/en-us/samples/internet/imedia/netshow/crossbrowserembed/default.asp>
that is claimed to be cross browser. Now this is what's happening:
- It uses an .asx file but I'm using .wmv so I changed it to a .wmx
extension.
- The MSDN demo works in IE, MZ, and FF
- When I copy the files locally it doesn't work even though I edit the
paths accordingly.
- I uploaded a small sample .wmv file to my server and tried with a full
URL. This worked with FF but not with MZ.

This raises more issues:
- Why doesn't the MSDN demo work locally?
- Why doesn't MZ work?
- Why does it need an absolute URL? I can't know where the client will
end up putting the video files (as they don't yet know.)
- Why is there no decent documentation available :-(

Because it needs an absolute url. If you use http://localhost it will
point to the *user's* system when it's launched.
- Why doesn't MZ work?
Because you did something wrong.
- Why does it need an absolute URL?
That should be obvious, the redirector file has no base to work from, it
launches on the *client*, thus an absolute full url is required.
I can't know where the client will
end up putting the video files (as they don't yet know.)
Redirector files are not domain portable, first establish the location,
then create the files.
- Why is there no decent documentation available :-(

Try these:

No, it's not obvious. Why can't it work relatively from it's own
location? When I test with IE it doesn't need a full URL it will work
with a local one. Also the MSDN site doesn't say that a URL must be
absolute (unless I misread it.)
I can't know where the client will
end up putting the video files (as they don't yet know.)

I can't first establish the location. The client wants to move them
about as they need/want :-(

Try these:

http://www.spartanicus.utvinternet.ie/embed.htm

Thanks for the links. Unfortunately I'm required to embed the video files.

Ok, I've code the OBJECT working in IE and FF by using a redirector file
(thanks Spartanicus):

<object
id="WinMedia"
type="video/x-ms-wvx"
width="320"
height="286">
<param name="FileName" value="media/sample.wvx">
<param name="AutoStart" value="0">
<param name="ShowControls" value="1">
</object>

The issues that remain are:
- it doesn't work in MZ
- the PARAM values must be '1' or '0', 'true' or 'false' doesn't work
- the redirector requires an absolute URL I need to use a relative one
- I can't get it to work in FF with local .wmv files

Does anyone know how to fix any of these issues?
