Search utilities

UNIX O/S, Apache server
I am developing some html pages and would like to include cgi or php
"Search", "Web Search" and "Advanced Search" utilities. Could someone
recommend some good open source or freeware scripts to use

Thanks

In a different direction, look at the Google Search. If your page is well
indexed by Google, it's an effective tool.

If your pages "move around", then Google may have
trouble catching up. I'd recommend
http://sitelevel.whatuseek.com/ or FreeFind if
you're not making the search engine from scratch.

I use Perlfect Search.

http://www.perlfect.com/freescripts/search/

Free, has an http spider mode which I like. Does not do pattern
matching, and date searching is very limited, which is too bad. I'm also
not crazy about how it handles urls of search results. In sum, some good
points, some bad.

Is it true that Google can't handle 301's?

I don't know, not sure how they work, I'm
afraid... I can't use anything that involves
..htaccess, so I have to use a different approach.
What I had in mind was pages like my own, where
the pages retain their names but the contents move
around. Hope this makes sense.

Only if you are developing a big site ('cause it takes a bit of doing):

Thanks for your replies, v. informative and studying them. There is a
script, ==> advanced_script.php, that I've seen on many sites but cannot
Google it or locate it, does anyone have a handle on it?

Thanks

I would say pages moving around are a problem in itself (lack of
consistency in URLs hurts bookmarks, incoming links, etc.)

That is so true. Alle those pages that link to my
old "sites"... Webmasters don't always want or
care to update their link pages when you ask them,
either.

Must have been tired, the script I am referring to is
==> advanced_search.php

not ==> advanced_script.php

I'm assuming your question is rhetorical, but the followups indicate
that not everyone reads it as such. So, to answer the question: Google
handles the http response 301 just fine.
