Do you know of 6 clearly distinct colors that show up well on a white
background? I was thinking of the 6 standard colors
red/green/blue/cyan/magenta/yellow

however, on a white background, yellow, cyan, and green are hard to
read. Any suggestions? (html color codes would be great!)

Six (plus white) is way too many. If you use fewer colours, then people will
find it easier to spot clickable links in your HTML. You will also be less
likely to make your website inaccessible to colour blind visitors.

I don't get it. It just shows you the color, it doesn't seem to anything
else. The OP wanted to know what colors were readable on a particular
background. I don't see how this page tells us this any better than the
one I suggested. Help me out here.

Click the colors on the wheel and you'll see why I think it is better
Click several colors in succession and you'll see things as they should
be when trying to pick out a color scheme for your site.

Hmm. I see where you are going, but the one downside is this - I can make
out color differences much better than the average person. The juicystudio
thingie gives an objective comparison between colors. This merely overlays
them, and the comparison is entirely subjective.

Perhaps both used together would be best. Yours for determining the basic
color combo, and the other for checking to see that the contrasts are
sufficient.

While I do use juicystudio to check contrasts, for overall color
schemes, IMO pixy is better (JavaScript is required, but worth it):
