html link from browser link to xml editor

Hello - is there any way to create an html link to an xml file and
get it to open directly in an XML editor rather than in the browser
window?
Many thanks in advance.

Configure your browser to use a suitable external handler for files with
whichever text/xml and application/xml Content-types you wish.

It's not a website but an internal web application used within our
company - all relevant developers have the tool.
