Jakob Nielsen: Designing Web Usability? Other web HCI books?

Hi,

I am a web designer and have just recently took up the position of web
marketer for a company managing their intranet and external website. I
was interested in a book that provided good tips on a wide variety of
usability and accessibility issues.

I looked at Jakob Nielsons book which, from the toc, covered an
excellent variety of web usability issues. It also touched on intranets
which was very handy for myself. However, I did read a few unhappy
reviews and it is a little dated now (1999).

I was wondering if anybody could comment on it. Also, I perhaps get the
impression that there may be a more up to date version from another
author. If anybody could give any help that would be great.

I would say Nielsen's book is still current when it comes to usability
(whereas there has been developments on the back end front most
usability principles are relatively universal).

As for accessibility his book is not that great given the latests W3
etc standards.

I would recommend

Jeffrey Zeldman - 'Designing With Web Standards', New Riders (0-7357-1201-8)

This is well worth a read (as is his Web site):

http://www.jimthatcher.com/book.htm

In his book, "Constructing Accessible Web Sites", JT looks at
accessibility problems (inc. 508) in a Web site, both from a general
point of view and also from the point of view of two screen-readers and
a talking browser.
