converting existing page using tables to css

I'm working to convert our home page, http://bursar.indiana.edu such that
the current approach that heavily utilizes tables, uses css.

So far, I have been playing around with just the header section. The header
section has an image of the sample gates on the far left, and a Indiana
University image towards the center. Using straight css I can get the
approximate look, however, the Indiana University Image header actually
needs to have the color extended a bit before and after. I've been able to
get the color to extend after but not before.

The whole point of going towards css is to keep things simple. I'm wondering
if a better approach for the header might be to combine the sample gate
image and the Indiana University Image into one image such that the header
is just composed of this graphic?

Thanks,

Jim o

is the link you gave the link to your css-attempt-version or the
origional ?!

you managed to extend the color of the sample gates picture to the right
but not to the left .. http://bursar.indiana.edu/img/trgates.jpg ..
as far as i can see you added some 'color' in the picture itself, i am
sure you can do the same on the left side ?!

btw .. if you really want to remake the side using css instead of tabled
you should start with a clean-layout example and when that is solid
-ready you start adding the content.

ps. i would not merge the 2 images in 1 picture. i am afraid the
combined image would be significantly larger in kb than the 2 separated
(keeping an similar picture quality)
