spaces between floats

i'm trying to get two images to float next to float next to one
another, and although i can get it to do so just fine in firefox, i am
having problems in internet explorer. here's the webpage:

as you can see, there are spaces between the two black boxes in IE
whereas firefox has no such spaces.
any ideas on how to elimate the space would be appreciated - thanks!

This line: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
above the doctype, throws IE in quirksmode.
If you take it out, IE displays like a real browser ;-)

is there a list of things that throw IE into quirksmode somewhere
available online? doing a google search revealed one for Mozilla, but
not for IE:
