help with full screen div

Mel
i would like to have:

.. . .
.. . .

.. . .
.. . .
......................................
.. . .
......................................

and i would like this to occupy the entire page with "the middle row" expand
as necessary while "header/footer" remain the same fixed size.

i looked at 2 & 3 column layouts, but none of them are full screen size
(they change with content) which is fine if my page is longer than the
viewing area, however if the middle portion is small, the footers move up
the page and "kinda' look ugly.

can someone help please

You really have some balls to ask for help again. You were critical of
everyone that helped you the first time - telling them it doesn't work,
they don't understand, etc.

I know I would never help you. Get a good CSS book or find a good
online tutorial and learn the fundamentals. Your CSS questions are as
easy as it gets.

No. You're still top posting. Why should anyone bother to answer your
questions if you can't even take part in the conversation in a
civilised fashion?

You never said that. You just kept arguing, repeating what you wanted, not
saying anything different from what we'd understood the first time, rather
than saying, "I tried this, and here's what actually happened, and this is
the browser I was using, and here's a link to the page so you can see for
yourself." There isn't much psychic energy in this newsgroup, and few of us
are interesting in spending too much time guessing all the different things
you might mean but aren't saying.

(Guess which part of your message I'm responding to? Not so easy when you
put the response into different part of the e-mail from the text to which it
responds. NOW will you stop top-posting, please?)

It would help if your posting style was any better, it's in fact
considerably worse due to non snipping.

I think Harlan did that intentionally to demonstrate the issue.

In fairness, I agree, though you were a bit annoying with the top
posting and all. In fact, you still are, despite requests to stop.
Top-posting. And annoying.

Please post in normal conversational order as the rest of us do in
this newsgroup.
i merely copied and pasted the code and it did not work for me.
In that event, you should have said so.

For best results here, suply a URL to an example. If that is
impossible (and it is not, but for the sake of argument) a small
amount of code can be posted, but it should be tested and you should
guarantee it's EXACTLY what you're using, with no typos or omissions.
my apologies to all concerned.
No need to apologize, in my opinion. Just ask good questions, be
telling in your followups, and stop the damn top-posting, I'm cool.
i am not a guru like you guys and maybe someday...
Maybe. But this isn't about what you do or don't know about CSS. It's
about how you ask questions and how you respond to attempts to help.
am i forgiven ? or damned to eternal HELL ??

Not my department. Check with your priest...

Hey, I'd like you to use your shift key and stop top-posting too, but
we don't always get what we want, eh?

What you want is not easy to do in CSS. There are values for display
which make the element simulate a table element without actually being
a table element, which would be ideal. However, our old friend IE
doesn't support them.

See http://steve.pugh.net/test/test57a.html for a kludge that I have
found works some of the time. Depends on how you apply it. It's not a
perfect solution. In this case, there is none.

I'm disappointed to see that you've already broken your new year's
resolution not to drink anymore. It makes you go all funny and you start
to say really silly things in public and all.

What's funny is I'm stone cold sober now. Just wait, it gets better....

(Actually, I sometimes make more sense if I'm drunk. I sure type
slower.)

The explanation to him was right there. Sorry if you overlooked it, but it
really wasn't *that* difficult to find, since it was a rather large block
unprefixed by ">".

The issue here as you well know is snipping, this you both failed to
do/demonstrate and failed to mention to the OP.

If I were you I wouldn't presume to speak for the OP in regard to whether he
grasped the importance of arranging one's postings clearly so people can
follow them. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. Now, is there anything else
you'd like to fight about, or would you prefer to go on beating your chest
in public over a dozen or so extra lines of text I left intentionally in one
Usenet posting once upon a time?

I'd accuse you of being unhelpful if that hadn't made me chuckle.
