change cell bg color

Id like to change the background color of a cell hover like the
"a:hover" but it doesnt work as "td:hover". Is there a way to do this with

td:hover does work, just not in one, regretably common, browser.

If you want to have the effect work in that browser (and as 80%+ of
the web population seems to use it, you probablu do) then you'll need
a little bit of JavaScript instead of just CSS. Google is your friend.
