Material that does no scroll in web page

I'm writing a web page using Nvu. I have the page such that the
content is centered, with a column of links and media on the left hand
side. I want that column on the left to stay fixed, not scroll as the
user reads text on the right hand side.

How can this be done?

Never heard of it, sorry.

You can do that with frames (very bad!) or using the "position" property
in CSS, for example:

#some-element
{
position:fixed;
left:0;
top:0;
}

Personally, I think it's extremely irritating for web page elements not
to scroll, and I recommend you do not design your page like this.

Hello,

Nvu 1.0 is now 2.5 years old. You can use instead
KompoZer 0.7.10
http://www.kompozer.net/
which is an unofficial bug fixed of Nvu 1.0

It is clearly improved, better than Nvu 1.0. For instance, it does not
create
valign="undefin ed"
in its HTML code as Nvu did.
The nice thing is that Charles Cooke who was the author of the
official Nvu User Guide is now also the official KompoZer User Guide.

position: fixed;

how can I get it to work with IE
With IE 7,
position: fixed
will work. It will not work for IE 6 and it is not my recommendation
to try to make it work with IE 6. When Charles Cooke designed his Nvu
User Guide, we had this discussion and we decided to leave things as
they are. Same thing with the W3C with few of their webpages: they
chose and coded
position: fixed
knowing well that IE6 would not support it. Please understand that CSS
2.x specification is now 10 years old: it is up to users to upgrade
their browser.

Hi, I have a page with several server controls (textboxes, datagrid, ...) which are positioned absolutely from the right of the page (like RIGHT: 25px; POSITION: absolute;). that works well if the page has or doesn't have a scrollbar in any case (always). but when the page could have a vertical scrollbar (meaning that sometimes it appears and sometimes doesn't) the page control's moves to the right when the scrollbar appears as if the...

Hi all, I have a long web form on asp.net 2.0. When I go at the bottom and click on submit, a postback occurs and if there are any validation errors (no client-side checking being done), the page loads again, but this time the scroll position is at the bottom. This is annoying, because the actual validation error messages are on the top and the user cannot see them. Any ideas? I have turned off maintainscrollbackpositiononpostback in the...

Hi there, I do have a complex problem and wonder if this is possible to solve. Following situation. I do have a page, where you do have a frame inside that page. If there are a lot of changes you might need to use the internal vertical scroll bar inside the...

The maintain scroll position on postback feature works as expected with my site running under localhost on the development machine. When the files are posted to an IIS 6.0 web server running on a Win2k3 box, maintain scroll position on postback simply does not work. The Page_Load event handler in my aspx page has: Page.MaintainScrollPositionOnPostBack = true;

Hi: I have an pop-up window with an Iframe that has a text box with scrolldown. The scrolldown in the popup-window does not work but the scroll-down for the iFrame works. The strange thing is I have another html page that is a popup-window and the text box scroll-down for the iFrame works and so does the scroll-down for the outer window. I just can't tell what are the differences. I am using IE 6, sp2.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
