Project quality management is an important knowledge area of project management – one of the best practices used by many software industries. I believe that you know what 7 quality control tools are. How it is used in software product management is explained below:

1. Cause-and-effect diagram: For software, you can find out the software quality by considering causes related to faulty software requirement/design, inadequate documentation, lack of hardware support environment, power fluctuation, faulty installation, lack of user training which ultimately affects product quality.

2. Check sheet: This is very effective tool to check the severity of the defect/problem. In project management, risk management is done using check sheet.

3. Control charts: Processes are very important software development. The variation on these processes and the effect of those processes on the software quality can be assessed by Control charts. Unpredictable processes which go out of tolerance level should be avoided. This tool should be used to analyze the pattern of variation in data or process. Data analysis can also be done using control charts.

4. Histogram: It’s a statistical tool which can be used to identify compare the outputs, to check the mapping of requirements, to check the performance of the product over a period of time and for such statistical studies.

5. Pareto chart: This is a quality tool to know the frequency of occurrence of problem/defect. It represents the most common sources of defects, the highest occurring type of defect and so on.

6. Scatter diagram: This tool helps in finding out correlation among data/defects.

7. Flow-chart: This is very old and well known tool in software industry. It diagrammatically shows how the process flows.

These tools can be used irrespective of platform or programming language. Industries use one or multiple combination of these tools to control and assure quality. It's all about processes are rightly followed and requirements are satisfied.
