Excel functions to find trends in large sets of data

Is there a function in excel to help find trends in large amounts of data?

The main tool available in Excel in looking for trends is the trend line facility associated with charts. For any data series plotted on a chart you can fit a linear, logarithmic or polynomial regression line to the data, and show the correlation co-efficient to see how 'good a fit' the trend line is. For polynomial fits, I find that second and third order polynomials are the most suitable for modelling non-linear trends in real-life data.

You can also show the line equation on the chart. For a linear regression line the slope value tells you on average how fast the data is changing (growing or declining) per unit of time plotted on the x-axis. For non-linear trends the interpretation of the trend equation is more complex than this, but it is still useful to know.
