View Web Site without domain name

I wanted to show the community my Web Site, so they can tell me what needs to be modified, what looks good, etc. Do I absolutely need a domain name for this? Is there another way besides having to take my HTML and CSS and post it in notepad, then run it in a browser? Even if you did do it that way... you wouldn't be able to view the pictures, right? I'm starting to think I need a domain name....

P.S. How does that work? How do are people able to view the pictures, images, text, etc. of a website? When you register with a domain name, is your site saved to some server somewhere or something? I don't get how it works.... Do they access it directly from my computer????

Didn't have to. Most of the people just asked me if I wanted it when the subject of getting a new computer came up. One or two of them I just said something like "Well, I'll take your old one if your just getting rid of it."

Windows users is soooooo stupid. :)
I couldn't POSSibly comment on Windows users generally (being one myself you understand), but when you apply the "I want to move up to Vista as it's so koool" filter, then just look around for the sage nods :)

btw, there's a lot of technical content here. Perhaps this belongs to Misc. rather than the Cafe.

alrighty gentlemen, (and ladies I guess) I just signed up with 110mb, as suggested earlier by someone in this thread. It is a free web hosting site. I like it, and it looks great. I signed up, but as soon as I used my file manager, I deleted the index.htm file, and now my page will not upload when I visit it. HUGE newb mistake. Please Forgive.
First:
- What does the extension .htm mean?

Second:
- How do I create my own and solve my problem?

.htm or .html is the extension for an HTML file (a webpage). index.htm(l) is traditionally the default document served out of a directory.

So when you go to www.whateversite.com, you're (probably) getting their index.htm(l)

You may also see the default document named "default.{htm, html, asp, aspx, etc....pick one}"

Create one in notepad, write the html, save as, change the file type to all files, and then save as index.htm(l)

BTW, if I'm covering anything you already know, please don't take it as condescending, just that I don't know how much you know.

Thanks very much. I'm just trying to cram all this info into my head at once ;)

Alrighty guys, I'm off to a good start. Got the Web page running (with all your help and tips, so thanks), it's on 110MB.com free web hosting. I've run into a problem though. I have forgotten all about screen resolution. I myself have an 800x600 screen, and because I am still newbie-mistake-prone, I have set up my web page to fit my screen and my screen only. When I used my sister's computer with a 1024x768 screen res., it looked very small and was placed in the top left corner of her screen. I understand that I need to put a "filler" background on either side of the page so that it appears correctly on both screens. My question is:
- I notice on legitimate sites like Microsoft, Myspace, or IGN.com, that the "filler" space one either side disappears on my screen so that it fits right. On my sisters larger screen, the "filler" space appears on either side of the web pages so that it is center on her 1024x768 screen.
- How do I make this filler along the sides of my web pages?
- What do I have to do to make it appear without it on 800x600 screens, and make it appear with it on larger screens?

There are a lot of people with the 1024x768 screen resolution out there, and this is a big problem for me. Please help me fix it.

Well, I guess you could wrap all your content in this tag
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. <div style="margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto">
  2. all your content
  3. </div>
  4.
That should work.

Also, you should probably start new threads in the HTML/CSS forum for new questions like this.
