Controlling self-made USB-device?

I'm thinking of creating a USB device myself, haven't decided yet what's it's gonna be, but it seems a challenge to me. I'll probably start af with a couple of LED's that can be controlled from the computer, but I was wondering on what languages can control a USB-device, or possibly only assembly could do it? I did a little research myself already (and I'm going to do a lot more), and so far I've found out that you can only send one bit at the time through a USB cable. So maybe someone around here can tell me more?
