You have 2 containers measuring 5 liters and 3 liters with no markings on them. You owe your brother 4 liters of water. And you have 20 liters. How can you repay your brother the 4 liters.

Fill the 5 liter, pour it into the 3 liter, give your brother the remaining 2 liters in the 5 liter jug, do it again. You will have given him 4 liters.
very nice.. that is exactly correct
it seems that you are a person with a strong sense of math..
Get the 20 liters.
Take out 5 liters, and dump it
repeat
Take out 3 liters and dump it.
repeat.
You are left with 20 - 5 - 5 - 3 - 3 = 4 liters.
Give these 4 liters to your bro.

You can also give him the 4 litters together, just fill the 5 liiter, pour it into the 3 litter one, then throw the 3 litters away.
Now pour the other 2 litters into the 3 litter one, it'll have space for 1 more litter.
Fill the 5 litter and pour it into the 3 litter till its full, you'll have now 4 litters in the other one.

If your willing to throw water away, why not just fill the 5 liter once, and give that to your brother...I'm sure he could find a use for the other liter...
who knows. why would you and your brother be quibbling over something like water? Maybe if you lived in a desert...

you dont have to throw it away, just put it in the original container, the one with 20 lts in the begining.
you can use it to wash your car, you can drink it, you can put a golden fish in it, you can put it into a super soaker and ... well throw it away.

You should probably return it to the place where you got it, like the river or lake, since that is best for the environment.

Die Hard :With a Vengeance.
1. first fill 5 litres container
pour half of the container to the 3 ltr one
Remaining liquid in the 5 litre=2.5 ltr
2. fill the 3 litres container
pour half of the 3 ltr container to the 5 ltr one ( which already has 2.5 ltrs) Hence total volume in 5 ltr container = 2.5 +1.5 = 4 ltrs
give it to ur brother
thats it
Refuse to give any of it.
Be greedy, keep it to yourself.
be a bully to your brother!
you could really do quite a bit with 20 litres of water....isint it?
Or, ask your brother to do it.
If he does it he gets the 4 litres, otherwise he goes home empty :)

But that's not exact. How can you be sure you have poured half? What if the container is not even/similar the whole circumphrence and length?
