GAL IC Programming

Hello All, I have some pc boards which need repair/replacing and found that they have a GAL16V8B-10LP ic on them. I've done allot of web searching but haven't gotten clear answers to all what is involved in reading and
re-programming this IC type.
Can I just desolder a known good GAL and copy it and reprogram a blank, like a regular uv eprom?
Are there any issues or gotchyas to be aware of?
What am I up against here?

Thanks very much!

The biggest gotcha that I can see is the retail price of a programmer. And I found no used ones on Ebay.

Without doing a ton a research, I believe that there is a
LATTICE Part # GAL16V8B25LP 20-PIN ELECTRICALLY-ERASABLE
which is probably pin compatible, but you'll most likely want to by blank parts of the same type as you are replacing (around $4 each).

Thanks Bartonc for your response.

You are correct, I will be replacing parts per exact part number and the cost of the programmer is certainly a concern but not insurmountable.

I'm more concerned with the operation, that being, can I just remove a known good device, copy it and reprogram a blank, as done with regular UV eproms.

I believe so but this one is new to me and I need to be very sure what I'm getting into, thus I'm asking the way more knowledgeable here!

Thanks

Yeah, sorry: when you said "UV eproms", I was thinking that you wanted to erase the device. You may want to ask the guys as Advin about this little guy.
