XMLHTTPServer out of process calls hanging ASP?

I am working on an application in which classic ASP pages use an XMLHTTPServer object to initiate a server-side web service call to a .NET application (located on the same server).

For performance reasons (due to the frequency of the calls under heavy load) I have introduced a sleep on the web service to make sure that IIS keeps on working (on un-related threads) and sure enough - I cannot get any response from ASP until the sleep finishes and the web service responds.

This was unexpected to me. I fully expected the thread in question to wait, but I did not expect for other browsers accessing other ASP pages on the same server to hang also.

I can get rid of this problem by increasing the Worker thread count from 1 in the default app pool - but I am not sure if that is just band-aiding a symptom, and I am not sure of the performance ramifications under heavy load.

Has anyone seen this kind of behavior from XMLHTTPServer (any version)?

Thanks you
