Movie Editing Software?

I took a video on the weekend of a war re-enactment with my new camera. It turned out to be 900MB and since I was taking pictures at the same time there's points where the video freezes and you can hear the camera taking the picture.

I've learned a lot just doing this one video.

Anyways, I'd really like to chop out the good stuff and make smaller files that I can post online.

Does anyone know some free movie editing software that I'd be able to edit this massive and raw .avi file?

So, tell us, Frinny: What platform are you running on, anyway?

FFmpeg is a command line tool that can do basic editing (cutting, letterboxing, resizing) as well as full trans coding. Perhaps you could use this to get your videos in a compatible format to work with in Windows Movie Maker.

Just curious, do you get any error messages when you try loading up the .AVI file?

I did get an error message...but I'm not at home right now so I don't know what it said. Probably something like that file type is not supported.

Yes, Atran, we are all able to use Google, however I think Frinny was asking for a recommendation.

I can recommend against Sonic something-or-other8. It came free on one of my machines and worked OK, but when I purchased a copy I had issues with their so-called "support". I broke down and spent the $100US on Pinnacle. It is very well worth the money.
