audio files

Does anyone understand how dictaphones used by doctors ultimately become voice files for transcriptionists? I am trying to determine the feasability/practicality of this in case I want to do it freelance or start my own company.

The company I work for uses software by a company called Execuscribe which coverts zipped files to audio. I use a foot pedal to transcribe the files in a word processor, zip the file and send it to the company I work for.

But I don't know what is going on from the upload end of the process. What tools would I need to supply to the doctor/client? Can it be done easily? HELP!

Just thinking out loud: I guess a good reason to go from audio tape to word processor to digital audio is to get the doctors voice out of the equation. Hmm, seems like a lot of extra work (doing the transcribing).
Anyway... AT&T seems to be the leader in the field of text to speach. They publish tons of their research (probably software too). This link may be a good place to start.

If you had ever transcribed for doctors, you would know that voice recognition is a long ways away for this particular field. Their transcription is analagous to their chicken-scratch writing.

We used to love playing with this at work! Not to mention how awesome it is to make one download it and send your buddy some rude message.

I actually bought a voice recording machine yesterday, and the process is easier than I thought. You don't need anything but a USB connector which transfers the voice files from the recorder to the computer. From there you can upload, zip, whatever.
