eml/mhtml files

I have Windows XP with outlook express. For some reason I am unable to open eml or html attachments. I HAVE unchecked the "do not open box" in the tools/options/ security tab. Any ideas out there? All help gratefully accepted.

So when you double click on it, it doesn't open in a browser?

First I get a window that says "unknown file type". The choices are open or save. If I right click the choices are open, save, or save all.
It opens a blank page with a header that says c:/'documents and settings tstillings sometimes it will have the original email message, but never the attachment.
Although both "eml" and "mhtml" file types are in my list of file types, and both are associated with (open with) I.E., it seems to not recognize them.

I just noticed a typo in my original posting. It should read "mhtml" not "html" sorry.

.EML files are used by other E-mail clients as well. Note: .EML files with "funny" names in multiple folders implies the Nimda worm. OE removes access to attachments using this file extension. However, using forward on the tool bar in OE the attachment shows as an envelope that if clicked opens the attachment (use caution if you do this, it could be a worm). Others have reported that importing the message into Outlook from Outlook Express works to make the attachment files visible. Note: This file type can become infected and should be carefully scanned if someone sends you a file with this extension.
Mhtml is an archived web page. See the wikipedia page for more info.

Hope that helps.

Right click on the file. Select open. It will then give you two options. Choose "Select the program to open with". For the mhtml file, choose internet explorer. For the eml file, choose outlook if it's there, otherwise you will have to look through c:\program files for it.

I have those associations set up. They still will not open. In the box that comes up when I click on "open" it says "unknown file type". Is this the real problem? How do I get it to recognize the file type?

How did you set that up? Through the control panel and folder options? You can set file associations there.

I was going nuts trying to open .mht attachments with IE and Mozilla.
Finally found in my case the attachments were .wmv files within attachments
and I can only open them with Outlook Express. Open the message there
and click on attachments and viola! they open. May take a couple of
attachment clicks.
