Hi

I came across a query in Javascript titled "entering a numric only " and the path or the location of it was "Community > Newsgroup Archive > comp.lang.* > JavaScript > entering a numric only " , however when I tried posting a reply I couldn't, what seems to be the problem? ..

Well I think the newsgroups are read-only:

Browse popular development related usenet newsgroups right from thescripts.com.

Oh, but then how come people are asking questions in the archives and some other people are able to reply to it but not the subscribed users like me?? I noticed that mostly all users over there are addressed as 'guests' ... and there is just a 'report' link and no 'reply' link on those posts ..it says on the post 'posts n/a' ...now whatever that means .....but if somebody else can reply then why not us?

If you check on the dates on those posts you'll find that the discussions used to take place a long time ago perhaps earliest 2005. People used to contribute to them before they became archived.

The archives are actually Google newsgroups and are linked here as reference material. If you wish to refer to any of the posts you can post a question in the Javascipt forum here and refer to the post in the google newsgroup archive.

Actually Google not not own the newsgroups, they just provide an interface onto them, they are not owned by anyone.

The newsgroups are a series of connected servers(all owned by different people) around the world that all carry and exchange the same information and are accessable either by Newsgroup Reader or via email if you have an account on a Newsgroup Server (Google provides a free interface but if you read the newsgroups also an interface that messes up the formating).

Because of this distributed nature it is virtually impossible to delete a message on newsgroups since not all the servers support message deletion. In many ways forums like this one have taken over from newsgroups, a lot of(well some) ISPs that used to run newsgroups now run forums instead.

Well thanks for the info Banfa, so does that mean that in order to be able to post a thread on these discusssion groups or to reply to any post I must subscribe seperately there ?
