Hard Drive

I was wondering if there is any way I can completely take everything off your Hard Drive. I need to take everything off my Hard Drive because of a virus on it that will not get off no matter what I do.

So any thoughts?

Hi there,

Looks like your boot sector in infected, kindly issue the command below to rewrite Master Boot Sector (MBR) before creating any partition on your physical disk.

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1.   fdisk /mbr
  2.
FDISK /MBR rewrites the Master Boot Record

Thank you for your help. I have one question. I was reading the article you linked and all I am confused about is where you access the Fdisk from. If you could clarify this for me it would be much appriciated.

I apologize but after further research I find I cannot run Fdisk on my XP and I will have to find a way to fix it some other way.

Hi there,

What do you mean by cannot execute Fdisk on your XP? Fdisk is a product of Microsoft, it exist in almost every operating system produced by Microsoft.

Fdisk can be run through the command prompt, but it literally takes everything off your hard disk, so make sure you have all those CD's that came with your system.....

I meant I couldn't run DOS and I don't know how to run Fdisk on XP and I can't find anywhere on the internet to show me how. I really need to know how to execute Fdisk on Command Prompt but I think I got it.

Start->Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt

I don't know if i can still remember this but try this one:

insert your cd installer of windows XP, then type in run, (cd drive):\winnt32 /cmdcons

this will install your command console and after restarting your windows, you will see an option for command console..this will act as your MS-DOS.

hope this helps...regards.

Actually, I _do_not_ have fdisk on my XP SP2, and when I tried to run my old dosutils, it rejected it based on the version.

I finally had to resort to a self-booting utility CD which had something that would rewrite the MBR on it.

That's great if you already fix your MBR.

Anyway, Windows XP command is not Fdisk /mbr it's Fixmbr.

Cheers.
