What the <bleep> happened to thescripts?

8,435 Expert 8TB
Hi all.

Is it just me, or did the format of the forums change drastically overnight? :(

I must say, I don't like the new layout at all. Can we have a switch to display in the old or new format, or something?

I'll bet KUBie's pulling his hair right about now: lots of things broken, etc.
I like seeing avatars. I miss seeing the open/closed status most.

My main complaint is not being able to easily see which threads are subscribed, and which have new posts since I last viewed them. I gather there is, as you say, a lot happening right now. So, no point grumbling for now, I suppose.

The last post by is certainly a good thing that I'm seeing now. I think KUB is doing great.

I have raised all of these points with KUB yesterday at about 13:00 GMT when the changeover actually occured.

I believe(hope) he will do something about it.

Thanks to everyone that has been sending bug links and information to get things to normal. Still more work to be done.

If there is anything missing please PM me.

Thanks for the work KUB.
I know how much fun being the admin can be - especially when anything goes wrong.
Are you a one-man-band by the way?
Or does Banfa or someone else help out with any of the admin stuff?

PS Just had a thought. Would it be possible for the TIME of the last post on a thread to be displayed rather than just the date?

Sometimes that would be handy to tell which subscribed threads have been updated since last I was in them.

Hi KUB,

The new things here are a lot...

In fact some things are very suitable... You can read the first senteces of the post and not loose time to open all posts... So the users will be stimulated to write clearly, strongly and try to attract the attention and obtain replies...

The annoying things...

No possibility to sort by number of replies, Date and the oders sorts that functionned...

Yeah, It's not very important, but it was a good functionnality... I've done me a statistics about the heavy and very newbie questions in Access :) /Those are with 0 replies usually/

I've needed a litle time to accomodate with the new vision...

And an other thing... The tool that switches the number of pages can be also in the top of the page?

Congrats

Actually, that was available in the old setup, just by hovering over the subject link. I really prefer it that way, as it allowed a much more compact list.

That's easy - just move the mouse pointer out of the way. :-)

Yeah the scrolling with mouse is fabulous! but if there is boutons to transfer from one page to an other in the top of the page, I can adapt me however... Maybe less topics per page?

The table view was more compact... but i've used the current view 2 - 3 days and i've adapted me!

But it's better to have some of the last functionnalities... PLS!

And maybe sorting the posts in a forum by user... So clearly see the tendencies in his posts... It should be interesting!

:)

KUB,

I PMed this to you, I know, but in the interests of sharing it publicly, I'll post it here (probably the more appropriate place anyway).

I don't know if the options are available with the BBS software that you're using for this site, but some nice additions, to make navigation easier, would be :
1. Replace the links at the top of each page that enabled you to go to the current, parent or grandparent folders of the link you're currently in.
2. Add these same links at the bottom of each page too.
3. Have a link after each post, enabling the browser to take you to the start of the thread (with the idea of getting quicker access to those important links).
4. Have the 'Go to page #' links at the top and bottom as well.

These are some ideas I've seen implemented elsewhere and they do (in my experience) make the browsing easier.

I'm sure you're very busy at the moment with the changes you're already making (things appear a lot more settled down now btw - well done), but if you agree with the suggestions you could maybe add them to your 'to do' list.

Best regards -Adrian.

Something else I've been wishing for for some time is the ability to subscribe to a thread without posting a message in it.

Every now and then, I'll see an interesting question and would like to know the answer. But unless I post a "me too!" message, I have to try and keep track of it manually. And if I do, then everyone sees the count go up and thinks it has been taken care of.

Yet another one... :)

This may be a feature of the software over which KUB has no control. But...

When one reads a PM, the count of outstanding PM's should be decremented on that page.

To explain: I was notified just now that I had received a new PM, and clicked OK to open it in a new window. At the top was an indication that I had another unread PM. Not too surprisingly, when I clicked that link, there weren't any.

Is it possible for the flag marking a thread as having been updated since 'I' last looked to have a colour that would stand out.
I'm findig with a quick scan that I often confuse it for the flag marking a thread as registered.
I know it doesn't look exactly the same but when scanning quickly through a large number having it highlit in (say) red or orange would make it stand out more clearly.

I've been thinking much the same thing. It would be nice if the two flags were better differentiated visually. But perhaps more importantly, those which have both flags (subscribed and new post) should be highlighted - say, the whole subject line in a different colour, or something. (Mind you, the "new post" flag still seems unreliable - in other words, it tells fibs.)

The ability to set such options for ourselves on the options page would be nice, too.

Good suggestion. A bit of money leasking out of the disk drive from time to time might be nice, as well. 8-)

Seriously though, I could really do without this advertisement which seems to have appeared at the top of the page. 8-(

Especially since it's urging me to register with theScripts so I can post messages. Didn't I already do that?

Actually I think it would be good if these flags appear in a fixed position relative to the thread title.

At the moment they appear just tacked onto the end of the second line which varies in length, if they could be right justified so these flags if present appear in a column at the right hand end of the second line I think it would make reading easier.

If possible I think it would be nice to have a 3rd flag indicating threads with no posts, I find it a little hard to pick out the number of posts to a thread from the information line. Even better would be a view you could go to that only lists threads with 0 posts.

Didn't the previous interface allow you to click on the heading to sort by (among other things) the number of posts? Perhaps we could just have that capability back.

That's weird. I logged out once and was shocked to see that sign-up thing at the top. That was the only time that I ever saw it, though.

Hey KUB, what just got bigger?

No, this is not a trick question. :)

I just noticed that suddenly I have to scroll down to hit Access in the list of forums on the right-hand side. Previously it was visible, just above the status bar.

There have been community forums added to the discussion zones that weren't there before.

Ah! The Introductions and Lounge, huh? Thanks.

Any chance we could get the Software Programmers Lounge on there somewhere, too?

Moving the lounges into their appropriate zones is under discussion at the moment. Should see some changes over the next couple of weeks.
