Questions about excel and online database

Is there a script that would allow a customer to upload an excel database and have it update all the info or is there any existing code that does that? I am just getting the "feet wet" with server technology and dynamic ecommerce, so please have patience with my questions. and thanks for the assist! we want some way to empower the client to update his product lists and prices and have the information update automatically.

I do something similar on a site I run, I use PHP.

However I get the "customer" to save the spread sheet in CSV format and then upload that. It is quite easy to interpret a CSV file in PHP, I don't know about other scripting languages.
