ODBC Connection Error

I am trying to configure an ODBC connection to a MySQL 5.0.12 Beta-nt instance. However, on testing I get the following error;

[MySQL][ODBC 3.51 Driver]Lost connection to MySQL server during query

If I try to connect via cmd I get the following error;

ERROR 2013 (HY000) : Lost connection to MySQL server during query

The strange this is when I disable Norton Internet secruity all works fine. The Windows Xp firewall is turned off and Norton is configured to allow MySQL.

Anyone have any ideas
