Getting performance metrics of languages

Hi,

I have set up a website to try and gather performance metrics for programming languages. The aim is simple: when I pick up a new language it always gives me 1001 ways of doing anything. Which is the best strategy for any language? What happens when a new version is released?

With that in mind I have setup http://www.savagepm.co.uk/, a repository for language performance metrics. To start with its just trying to benchmark basic operations in the language - array manipulations, for loops and the like, but in time I hope to add more in depth looks at structures, so the site can provide a primer for anyone switching to a language.

In addition I hope to catch the ever shifting performance characteristics of rapidly evolving languages - new release of PHP comes out, how much better is it than my old version? How about if my target platform changes?

Currently the data returned is not viewable, but I intend to add some scripts to do that this week.

Anyone that is interested in giving a hand, give me a shout!

Cheers,

Alex
