how to create Virtual or Ghost Partition

2 New Member
Hi, new to this community.I am not really sure if this was the right place, because this community seem to be for developers really.

Well my question is, as the topic states, how to create a virtual or ghost partition?

I think virtual might be the wrong term for it, as when i try to google it, it comes with creating a drive letter to go to a folder in your current drive. Which wasn't exactly what i was looking for.

And when try to search for "ghost partition" or "ghost drive" i get how-to about Norton Ghost.

Of course i could be just searching for an entirely wrong thing as well, so i'll explain what my needs are.

The purpose of the "ghost" partition, is to create a self restore drive really. I was thinking of doing a clean install of windows and the programs i normally use. Then maybe use a program to copy my HD to another drive, well in this case, to another partition. Then i would like that partition to be invisible. So any viruses wouldn't damage it, and if stuff happens, i would just format the partition and then run the program to copy the HD again.

Kinda like how new store bought PC aren't coming out with restore disk, and are using a "ghost" partition as a restore disk. I am sure it is a partition, cause i actually formated a PC with their restore feature on a ghost partition without realizing it.

I believe Norton Ghost can do this, but i don't want to buy Norton Ghost.

Thanks for the link. But that article is quite old. posted in 2005.

And most of those specs from that page is around win98/XP. I am actually going to use this for Vista. Most likely 64 bit, but it would be great to have compatibility with both x86 and x64 versions, because i may be dual booting both versions, just because there are so many "mods" that are made by other users in only x86.

I have a page with images that the user can drag from one frame to another. I need them to see a "ghost image" of the image they are dragging, while the original stays put. I use the onmousemove event to keep the ghost image under the mouse pointer. There are three problems: (1) if the ghost image is dragged so it is partially off the edge of the screen, scrollbars appear. This not only looks bad, it can cause the page to autoscroll...

Hi I know that this is off topic but this is the best I can do. I have gone round and round on Symantec's web site and got nowhere. My question if fundamental and I expect the answer is brief. A couple of years ago I bought Ghost 2001. I have never used it in anger but I did restore a partition into bootable condition as a test. So what is the essential difference between cloning to an image and

Hi I use the following syntax to have events inherited from base to child classes which works nicely (virtual and override keyword on events). But I am wondering if it is a "supported" way of using events since I never saw it used anywhere in MSDN documentation/samples?! Or it will just break when I upgrade to .NET Framework 2.x in the coming years namespace MyNamespac public delegate void MyDel() public class MyBase public virtual...

I have been using a label with the TreeView control - to simulate the ghost image of a node during drag/drop (so that a ghost of the node appears to be floating next to the cursor on a drag/drop). This works peachy when I had a form that used the TreeView control (from Microsoft). The time came that I needed to change the TreeView - so I created a control that inherited from the TreeView class.

Hi, In one of my current projects, I am willing to create a secure zone such as Acronis does in its application to store some confidential information only accessible to the current machine user. I know that .Net doesn't provide such functionalities therefore I went on MSDN Library and also on Google to look for any solution with no result... I first guessed that using WMI it could be doable (System.Management

Hi, On a multi-partition instance, can you create a database on a single parition? How??? The db architects want to use one instance for four databases where only one is big enough for a multi-partition. The other three are small. I'd like to create them only on one partition but can't find any documention on how to do this.

Hello, I'm a student software developer. As a part of an excerise I'm doing I'm trying to build a program to create "mount files" and mount them. Something like Sarah Dean's OTFE but really really basic, just to create partitions and mount them. Nothing else. All I want to do is be able to create a hidden partition inside an existing partition (by providing an offset just like in FreeOTFE) and be able to mount and dismount it. Without...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
