changing picture on a button based on some event

I want to have one button which has a static and dynamic picture. when it is clicked a list of buttons will appear which has a image and some text. when i click on any one of them just the picture will go on that main button.

to ellaborate more, i want to implement the "change status" effect of any chat application. like when i click on the status, it displays a list of status' along with some images... the status is changed with selected status... like offline(disabled logo)/busy(red logo)/available(green logo).

Can anyone please suggest how to do it using AS3?
