CD/Flash detection help

I have been trying to find a method to detect when a cd has been inserted. I would prefer to use java, but I am open to other languages as well. I came up with a method that uses a timer to query the drive itself, but I do not think that is a very efficient/proper method to do what I want.

The reason I included flash is because I would guess that it would be very similar to cd detection also.

If anybody has helpful hints or tips that would be appreciated.
