Are mail marketing campaigns effective?

Up to now I've relied on my website, word of mouth, networked connections, etc. to gain new business. I'm an independent IT consultant.

I've been wondering whether to expand my marketing in more traditional forms and have considered Mail Shot campaigns. So I'm wondering if sending leaflets out to a couple of thousand companies is an effective marketing strategy for an independent consultant.

It's something I've considered as well and would be very interested if anyone has any experience of the effectiveness of this kind of campaign.

I am not an independent IT contractor but I do work in a marketing department and am responsible for the companies websites and marketing emails.

Mail is fairly hard to track an ROI. Unless you are giving out coupons, or following up with each new client as to where they heard about you. Mail also often gets ignored.

Email marketing can be effective with the right product to the right person.

Right now the best form of advertising is online advertising. An ad network like google's adwords is a great way to geo-target your market. The great thing about these types of ad networks is you only pay for clicks. It really is the best bang for your buck. Combined with tracking and statistics they provide, it can really help you to tweak your ad campaigns to be more effective and you can clearly see your ROI.
