Installing OS on Virtual Desktops using VMWare

I have VMWare Player and am attempting to create a couple of VM's. However, I am having problems installing the OS's.

In one case I am using a Disc with Windows XP Pro, which installed but won't update. Windows Update keeps giving an error msg.

In the other case I am using an ISO file for Win 7 Pro 32bit and it won't complete the install it just keeps erroring out.

The Parent machine has win7 ultimate 64bit installed but not sure if that is in any way connected.

Any advice welcome.

What is the error message you get when you try to update Windows XP?

It goes through the normal procedure of checking the installed software, then it gives me the options to install critical upgrades but when I press the button to see the upgrades I get the following message.

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.
  2.
BTW, the options are just links to faq etc.
