DB2 ESE already includes the DB2 Connect functionality (I believe ESE
even includes a very limited license to connect to host data sources,
although not as a gateway).

You can create a new instance, using 'db2icrt -s wse', and install your
DB2 connect license file.

Not anymore it doesn't.
You can create a new instance, using 'db2icrt -s wse', and install your
DB2 connect license file.
Licenses are applies globally for an entire copy of DB2 (at the install
path), not per instance.

To answer the original question, "yes." However, you have choices on how to
do this. You can install to a new location if you don't want your ESE
instances to have access to the host databases, or you can install over top
of ESE if you do want your ESE instances to have access to the host
database.

Separate copy (vs install to the same location)
* takes up more HD space (Connect Server is about the same size as ESE)
* prevents your ESE instance(s) from connecting to a host
* need to set up new instance(s) to connect to host with
* allows you to upgrade one product without upgrading the other
* requires the universal fix pack for upgrade (instead of product-specific
fix packs)

Hope that helps.

What does that mean, "Not anymore"? If someone uses the term ESE, that
implies DB2 V8 since in V9 it is called DB2 Enterprise (but hard to know for
sure what OP has). Are you saying that something is different between V8 and
V9 with regard to DB2 Connect, and if so, what exactly changed?

I believe that DB2 ESE (V8) has a 5 user license of DB2 Connect built into
it.

As far as I'm aware, DB2 9 Enterprise Server Edition is still being sold.
The name 'UDB' disappeared, as did the term "version" (so it's "DB2 9" and
not "DB2 UDB v9"), but ESE still is there.

With regard to the connect licenses built in to ESE. They're gone, unless
you purchased DB2 v8 ESE prior to the announcement and you got upgrade
protection.

Yes, v8 ESE has some connect licenses built-in. DB2 9 does not.

My understanding is that it is now called DB2 Enterprise starting in version
9, but I admit that is nitpicking and IBM is not always consistent on what
they call it. Or I could just be wrong about the name change (I saw that in
Passport Advantage).

IBM likes to change product names and web page links often. Maybe they think
these changes are progress, when in fact it just infuriates customers.
Yes, v8 ESE has some connect licenses built-in. DB2 9 does not.
That's good to know. Thanks.
