I need to check the position of '(' in a string.

Hi I want to check in string that the 8th character should be an open brace.......... means the datatype of the variable is VARCHAR of 40 and the data should be in the format as 1234567(*10) and it should first check that in 8th position an open brace should be present and then only it should allow for further compilation............ So, now i want to know how to get the 8th character to be checked?

The command which I thought of trying is

substr(char('1234567(*10)'),8,1) = '('

Can any one please tell whether it works or not? Its very important and urgent for me. Thanks in advance.

Why don't you test it and find out?

Thank you, for the suggestion. I tried giving the same expression in a table and it didn't worked. But I have to give this condition in a stored procedure and my wroking environment is a live environment. So, I can't play with it as my wish. Any way I'll find out my own way, thank you once again for the reply.

Since the SUBSTR function can take three parameters, the string, start position and length of the substring, why not just do
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. SUBSTR(yourString, 8, 1)
