Raw devices

Sorry if this is a FAQ.

On AIX 5.3, running DB2, storing data on a SAN with various RAIDs:
Are raw devices really relevant nowadays? What performance gains are to be
expected, all things equal?

Given that servers today have a lot more memory (and enable use of larger
DB2 buffer pools), raw devices are less relevant than before. They never had
much of an effect on OLTP applications where queries accessed data via
indexes (unless the table is small).

If you have large data warehouses with queries that do frequent table scans,
raw devices may be justified. Otherwise, you will probably not see much of a
difference.

With DIO and NO FILE SYSTEM CACHING, they are practically irrelevent.
