I've tried opening in notepad (windows) but it only shows a bunch of
odd characters. Occasionally a block of meaningful text appears...

On Unix/Linux you can use vi or more (Unix) or less (Linux). On Windows
something more robust than Notepad will work: Crimson Editor is my
suggestion though there are a ton of other ones out there.
How can I get "parse" errors, not runtime errors, output to a log file of my
choice (and preferably in a format I can choose)? I'm running PHP4.
