Searching the Information Center

P: n/a
All,

In the past there have been complaints that the search facility of the
Information Center left a lot to be desired.
So for those who care there is news that the DB2 9 Information Center
has a greatly improved search:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce...w/v9/index.jsp
Not on DB2 9 yet (it's out since 2 weeks!), don't worry I'm told a
refresh of the DB2 V8 Information Center is just around the corner and
it will include the improvement.

Any feedback on whether we've hit or missed the mark is much appreciated.

Cheers
Serge

Looks better, cleaner and to have some sort of rating on the search
results .The Data warehouse center stuff is no longer included, the
prominence given to this was always frustrating.
The highlighting of all search result words can ( still ) be annoying.
The "show summary" for the most part just seems to duplicate the result
list.

Interesting! I've never been a fan of how the whole infocenter thing works
anyway, but this seems pretty cool. Will have to use it more before forming
a final opinion.

One thing that I would like is to be able to download the related PDF file
of the actual manual directly from somewhere in the infocenter. (Or maybe
that's available and I just haven't found it?)

You can turn search highlighting off by clicking the
third-from-the-left tool bar button.

Because there are multiple language versions of any given PDF, and
because each country manages their publications independently, it's not
straightforward to determine what language version of a book we should
download, and where we should get it from. However, if you follow the
link for the PDF at the bottom of each topic, you'll be shown a URL for
the IBM Publications Center where you can download (and, in some
countries, order printed versions of) books.

You can also get books from the DB2 9 Support Page:

I'm pleased to tell you all that the search facility for the DB2
Universal Database Version 8.2 Information Center was also upgraded
last Friday. You should see significant improvement in the search
results, with more accurate ranking of topics and better search
precision than was previously available.

Thank you very much. The initial loading of the infocenter is much
faster now also. I really like that, it saves a lot of time.
