max number of colums - DB2 version 8.1

can anyone tell me the max number of columns for a table in version
8.1?

It depends on the page size of the table space that you use. Have a look at
table 12 here:

No idea on the limits for v8 but v7 had 500 columns on a table with 4k
page size and 1012 columns on tables with larger page size.
