Migrating Application SErver with DB server

Hello there!
I have the following configuration.
Two AIX Servers: the first is server as an application server (SAP SEM)
and the second as the database server (DB2 V7.2 with FIXPAK 12). The
database is located on IBM SHARK Storage.

There is a need to consolidate the above server and bring the database
on the application server.

The approach is to unistall db2 client on the application server and
install DB2 SErver. Then take the AIX Administrators to import the
volume group of the data from the db server onto the application server
(so that we can see the disks and the data).

How do i go about starting the database? Is a mere catalog of the
database sufficient? will i have to create an instance ?

thanks

IMHO, it's normally not a good idea to store your database on the same
server as your application. They will fight for resources.

As for moving it, you probably won't need to uninstall the client,
unless it's a different version of DB2. But you will need to move the
database by either backing up the database and restoring the database
on the new server with a REDIRECT option for the new physical layout OR
you'll have to recreate your objects, and export the data over using
one of the data movement utilities. You can't detach and reattach live
database files (datafiles and logfiles)...it will damage the database.
It works in SQL Server, but I've never seen it work in DB2 before.

Thanks a lot for the reply!
The decision for consolidation was done by higher management!

The installation of DB server is the same version as the client.
The current live database (the data files and logs) are found on shared
disks as i said before. Theses disks are grouped into a volume group on
AIX. This volume group will be imported on the application server.
Won't this do? or do we still have to backup and restore or import the
database? By the way, its a 350GB db!

If you're physically moving the disks from one machine to the other,
that *might* work because the all the pointers and container tags would
still point to the same place. It is still adviseable to perform a
backup of the database before removing any disk from the old machine.

You might want to call IBM support @1-800-426-7378 for tips, or at
least consult the IBM "Data Movement Utilities Guide and Reference" for
your version of DB2. You can find it in HTML or PDF format on IBM's
website. Good Luck!
