reorg performance and online reorg

GB
Hi All,

I would like to optimize my reorgs.

Here are several ways to shorten reorgs or keep data online during reorgs:

- db2 reorg has some shrlevel option: reference or change
- db2 v7 has an option for reorganizing everything but not the blob's
- third party tools like bmc reorg plus
- others ?

Did anyone here have the same needs, already tested these different
solutions ?

Thanks, Greg

When posting about DB2, make sure that you mention your OS (i.e., DB2 for
OS/390, etc.).

I am not sure what you question is. BTW, on-line reorgs may be longer than
off-line, so make sure you know what you are trying to optimize when
selecting a reorg method or tool.

sorry, db2 v7.1 on win2k

My database can only be offline for two hours a day, for this reason
either the reorg in offline mode does not take too much time or I can do
an online reorg which does not impact too much my db2 based applications.

There are different ways to do what I need to and probably I'm not the
only one having this reorg timing or availability problem.

Are there new reorg improvements or features in v8, is using a special
software recommended ?

1. DB2 V7 for Linux, Unix, and Windows is no longer supported by IBM.

2. DB2 V8 for Linux, Unix, and Windows supports on-line (INPLACE) reorgs.
Version 7 does not support on-line reorgs (except for partial on-line reorgs
of indexes when using the MINPCTUSED parameter in the Create Index).
..
3. "Sharelevel" is terminology used in utilities for DB2 for OS/390 and
z/OS. DB2 V8 for Linux, Unix, and Windows uses slightly different
terminology for these concepts (ALLOW READ ACCESS or ALLOW WRITE ACCESS).

4. I know that BMC Reorg Plus is available on DB2 for OS/390 and z/OS, but
not sure about DB2 for Linux, Unix, and Windows. Their website is not clear
about this.

1. DB2 V7 for Linux, Unix, and Windows is no longer supported by IBM.
I know and hope v8 upgrade is covered by support contract, will install
a v8 on a test system as soon as possible.

Sounds nice, it seems to include quite a few new and interesting
features ! CLEANUP ONLY, INPLACE ...

ok

Will ask BMC

Thanks for your interesting answer.
