New AIX DB2 instance requires new user?

Can it be that when I'm running DB2 8.1 on AIX 5.2 I have to create a
new user every time I want to create a new instance?

I tried the standard db2icrt command using a different instance name
and it errors out unless I have a user of the same name on the system.
I hate to say the thing I know most DBAs and especially Unix gurus hate
hearing, but Windows and the AS/400 don't make me do this...clearly I'm
new to Unix/Linux.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ari

Yes, you have to create a new user. The reason is that DB2 relies on the
operating system for authentication (why duplicate this functionality in
the DBMS) and you can manage each instance individually and independent of
another one.

Btw, are you sure that you need a new instance - or do you just need another
database?

Well, we should probably not start to argue about multi-user capabilities in
Windows and Unix. ;-)
