Upgrade AIX

P: n/a
Hello!

He have an AIX box with Version 4.3.3 and DB2 V7.2 FP6.
We need to upgrade the AIX to 5.1.
Does DB2 need to be reinstalled. Are there DB2 installation images
specifically for AIX 5.1.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks

You don't _need_ to reinstall (DB2 for AIX 4.3 does run on AIX 5), but
I would recommend doing it, if you can.

Why recommend that?

You say implicit that there's a differance in behaviour when you don't
reinstall db2 on a newer aix version?

Nevermind, I take this back. For DB2 v7.2, there is no separate AIX5
build. That is only in V8.

Regardless, I believe that the AIX 5 build of DB2 takes advantage of
the new features provided by AIX 5. If you run the old code, you don't
get access to these. Unfortunately, I'm not one of the developers, so I
can't speak to what features you may or may not have access to.

Actually, this is both true and untrue (but not really false either).

Version 7 has three different architectures, and, coincidentally, three
different deliverables.

The architectures are:

1. AIX 32-bit (same for AIX 4 and AIX 5)
2. AIX 64-bit for AIX 4.3.3
3. AIX 64-bit for AIX 5

The deliverables are:

a. DB2 for AIX 32-bit (contains only arch 1)
b. DB2 for AIX 64-bit for AIX 4.3.3 (contains arch 1 & 2)
c. DB2 for AIX 64-bit for AIX 5 (contains arch 1 & 3)

Deliverable a was made available right from 7.1 GA. Deliverable b was
made available in FP1, IIRC. It was refreshed at 7.2GA. Deliverable c
was made available in FP4, IIRC. It has not been refreshed as this is
post-v7.2.
Version 8 is a bit simpler. The architectures are:

1. AIX 32-bit
2. AIX 64-bit for AIX 5

The deliverables are:

a. DB2 for AIX 4.3.3 (contains only arch 1)
b. DB2 for AIX 5 (contains both arch 1 & 2)
Regardless, I believe that the AIX 5 build of DB2 takes advantage of
the new features provided by AIX 5. If you run the old code, you don't
get access to these. Unfortunately, I'm not one of the developers, so I
can't speak to what features you may or may not have access to.

Since arch 1 (same build) is used for both deliverables, I don't see
how 32-bit code would be able to take advantage of AIX 5 in one
scenario and not the other. The only performance/feature difference,
then, must be due to the 64-bit support.

However, for v8, I would recommend upgrading DB2 at the same time as
AIX because some installation tasks will fail should you wish to add
new DB2 products or new DB2 features for existing products.
