I do not know what "redhat advanced server 3.0" is, but I installed it on
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 ES a while ago. The main problems were that the
GUI installer does not work. I do not remember if this is related to the
fact that the Java stuff that comes with the distribution segfaults
whenever I tried it or not. I downloaded the IBM versions that work, but
must suppress the up2date updating of it, since the buggy versions use Red
Hat RPM numbers that are higher than the good, more recent, IBM ones. Grrr.

In any case, you must use the CLI interface to install DB2 UDB V8.1, and
then you might as well upgrade it right away to V8.1.5. Then you create
your instances, etc. I had to try two or three times to get it right, but
it can be done.

I started with the US$35 40 (or so) CD-ROM kit from IBM as I have dial-up
connection and did not want to download all that. (Actually, I needed only
one of those CD-ROM for what I use.) I had a friend with DSL get me the
upgrade.

Here are some steps for installing on DB2 8.1 on RH9 that I have used. This
might work on other RH versions also:

DB2-RH 9 Linux Installation Instructions

1. Install IBM Java 1.41 (or latest code) free from IBM website.

2. Set display (where host_name is your host)

xhost + host_name
export DISPLAY=host_name:0

3. Set Kernel for DB2 install only (not needed later)

LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL

4. Run ./db2setup

Install DB2 with an instance but DO NOT install Tools Catalog

5. Reboot

6. Update java path (your path may be different depending on which Java you
install)

db2 update dbm cfg using jdk_path /opt/IBMJava2-141
db2 update admin cfg using jdk_path /opt/IBMJava2-141

This will point DB2 to the correct JDK for DB2 and Admin Server.

7. You can now install Tools Catalog in you want one.

8. Update Linux parms

The default setting for the msgmni kernel parameter only allows a couple of
simultaneous
connections to DB2. To set this value at boot time, append the following
lines to
/etc/sysctl.conf:
# Sets maximum number of message queues to 128
# Set this to 1024 or higher on production systems
kernel.msgmni = 128

9. Change the etc/nsswitch.conf file to search DNS before
searching the hosts file. For example, hosts : dns files
